(8.5 miles)
This year's paddle began launched from Shattuck Park in
Neenah and followed the planned route. Most paddlers had to wait
for the railroad swing bridge over the navigaton canal in Menasha
to open, which allowed the last paddlers to catch up in time to
enter the lock. 158 boats, including two 5-person rowing hulls
passed through the first lockage; about 15 more had to wait for a
second lock operation. Spectators enjoyed the spectacle and many
took pictures.
Nice cloud cover kept the hot sun off the paddlers
for most of the trip and light breezes kept the air moving. A heavy
line of thunderstorms broke up before arriving in the area, saving
the event from rain or thunderstorms. No capsizes were reported and
only minor towing for tired paddlers. Most paddlers arrived to the
sound of a Lawrence University jazz combo at Lutz Park and had
their choice of food options from the Appleton Yacht Club or the
Grilled Tease. Many paddlers enjoyed some after paddle camaraderie
and networking as the sun came out and warmed thngs up.
Special thanks to our on-water escorts, which this
year included two boats from the Outagamie County Sheriff's
Department, two boats from the City of Appleton Fire Department,
the Town of Menasha water patrol and the Winnebago County Sheriff's
Department.
The coordinating committee has taken some notes to
improve next year's Park-to-Park Paddle, but welcome your thoughts
on how we can make things run more smoothly or be more fun for all.
