Student Outings

North East Wisconsin Paddlers, Inc. peridiocally hosts planned paddle events for people who have participatped in NEWP classes in the current year and members of the club. Some of these outings are in whitewater conditions and others are coastal or flatwater paddles on Lake Michigan or inland lakes and rivers. On these designated student outings, NEWP offers the use of its whitewater or sea kayaks and related gear and provides qualified instructors to guide participants through the event. The purpose of the student outings is to help participants apply the lessons learned in the pool classes to real whitewater and open water situations.

Additional student outings are not currently planned for 2010, but may be scheduled if there is sufficient interst. Contact your North East Wisconsin Paddlers, Inc. instructor if you are interested in another student outing.

Coastal Outing - Sunday June 13, 2010

A Student Sea Kayaker Event was held on Sunday June 13th, 2010 in Two Rivers at Paddler’s Park. This event was led by Chris Martin, with assistance from Chuck Sivret, Robin Nelson (instructors from Broadview YMCA), John Bodwin and Tom Koeppen (instructors from Two Rivers High School). This event was as an ACA event. (Click HERE for a printable copy of the pre-paddle information.)

Purpose of Event - To provide students wishing to learn to sea kayak an opportunity to further their basic skills of boat control and paddling techniques. The area we have chosen to conduct this event offers the paddler a choice of river setting and lake access, and both may be explored as the weather conditions and the paddler’s experience dictate. The event further provides the student all this under the guidance and watchful eyes of seasoned sea kayakers.

Trip Report - On Sunday, June 13th, 2010, 21 enthusiastic paddlers met in Two Rivers at Paddler’s Park.  There were 9 students and 12 instructors. All 3 areas were represented.  The day began with the lead, Chris Martin doing a brief stroke review on land, along with Tom Koeppen doing an onland wet exit review.

We launched and proceeded toward the harbor on the East Twin River. All paddlers were ready for a big lake experience.  We proceeded out of the harbor entrance and paddled south for a short distance and pulled out on the beach for a brief stretch.

The group returned crossing the harbor mouth in controlled smaller groups.  We met near the coast guard station where Chris discussed some of the dynamics of the water conditions as we reentered the harbor area.

The group returned to Paddler’s Park completing a 4.5 mile paddle. We had brownies with marshmallow frosting and rice krispie bars, thank you Linda and Girl Scout cookies thank you Steve and Ryanne Gainey.

We were fortunate this year as most of the students had their own boats and equipment.  We only needed 4 boats and equipment.  Cay brought a boat, John Bodwin brought two boats and Chuck and I brought one.  Thanks to those who brought boats.  Originally we had two more students who had signed up but at the last minute had to cancel due to a work obligation.  TPaddleDudehey did not have boats and Phil R had offered and brought a boat for them and we had also brought an additional boat. Thank you to Phil!  There was one other student who registered but did not show.
